High-Security Key Duplication
High-Security Key Duplication in Oakland County, Holly, and Howell, MI
A standard key offers access. A high-security key offers access control. With a standard key, anyone can walk into a hardware store or use a self-service kiosk and have a copy made in minutes. With a high-security key, that is not possible: the blanks are patented and not sold at retail, and getting a copy requires documented authorization from the key system owner. LKE Locksmith is an authorized dealer for three high-security keyway systems and provides duplication services for residential and commercial customers throughout Holly, Howell, Oakland County, and the surrounding Michigan area.
What Makes a Key High Security
Our high-security key duplication services will ensure you have the access you need, along with the security your business demands.
The most important feature for key control is the patented keyway. A patented keyway is a key profile that the manufacturer controls at the distribution level. Blanks cut to that profile are only available through authorized dealers, not at hardware stores or kiosks. As Locksmith Ledger notes in its overview of high-security lock systems, utility-patented key blanks and cut keys are available only through authorized channels and only after an approved individual's signature is on file. If a blank cannot be purchased without going through a dealer, an unauthorized copy cannot be made.
Beyond the keyway, high-security cylinders are built to tighter tolerances than standard cylinders and include design features that resist picking, bumping, and drilling. The combination of a patented key profile and a hardened cylinder is what separates a true high-security system from simply installing a heavier lock.
The Keyway Systems We Carry
LKE Locksmith stocks blanks and provides duplication for three systems, each taking a different approach to physical security and copy control. All three are available for new installations and for existing systems that need additional keys cut.
- Schlage Primus: a dual-authentication design requiring both a standard pin tumbler stack and a secondary sidebar to align before the cylinder opens. Keys cannot be duplicated without documentation, and the sidebar mechanism adds pick resistance that standard pin tumbler cylinders do not offer.
- Medeco: combines a patented keyway with angled key cuts and rotating pins, producing a significantly larger number of usable key combinations than standard cylinders. Medeco cylinders are available in deadbolt, mortise, and padlock configurations and hold UL437 and ANSI/BHMA A156.30 Level A certifications.
- CX5: built around tight dealer-network control of key blanks, making duplication outside the authorized chain effectively impossible. Locksmith Ledger identifies CX5 as producing UL437-rated cylinders with 60 different sidebar configurations per keyway, giving each installation a large number of non-interchangeable combinations.
Who Needs High-Security Key Duplication
This service is relevant any time you need to know that only the people you approve can obtain copies of a key. Common situations include:
- Businesses managing employee access: when a staff member with a standard key leaves, there is no way to confirm whether copies were made. A patented keyway system keeps the key record accurate over time and eliminates the need to rekey every time a key is not returned.
- Residential customers who want real copy control: a standard deadbolt gives you access security but no control over duplication. If you want to know your home key cannot be copied at a kiosk while a contractor holds it, a high-security cylinder is the answer.
- Facilities with master-key systems or IC core installations: when many cylinders share a key hierarchy, controlling who can obtain copies at every level is what keeps the whole system working as designed. We stock blanks for all three systems we carry and can cut keys for existing installations as well as new builds.
How the Authorization Process Works
Because copy control only works if duplication is actually restricted, we verify every request before cutting anything. What that requires depends on how the system was originally set up: some use a key record card issued at purchase, some require a signed authorization letter from the system owner, and some require the registered owner to be present. If you are establishing a new system from scratch, we can help set up a documentation process that stays manageable as your key count grows or changes over time.
High-Security Keys vs. Upgrading Your Hardware
High-security key duplication requires high-security cylinders. Standard cylinders use different keyways, and they are not interchangeable. If your existing locks are standard hardware, the first step is a cylinder or lock upgrade, not just ordering a new key. If the locks are worn or no longer suitable for the application, full replacement is often the cleaner path. If keys have already been widely distributed and immediate access security is the concern, rekeying resolves that more quickly and at lower cost. We can assess what you have and give you a direct recommendation. Standard key cutting without copy restrictions is handled through our key duplication service.

High-Security Key Duplication FAQs
What is high-security key duplication?
High-security key duplication is the process of making copies of high-security keys that are part of controlled key systems. These keys are designed to improve security and reduce the risk of unauthorized duplication compared to standard keys.
How are high-security keys different from standard keys?
High-security keys are often tied to higher-grade high-security locks and to specific cylinders designed for added resistance to common attack methods. Many are also part of restricted key programs that support better key control for homes and businesses.
What are restricted keys, and why does it matter?
Restricted keys are controlled to help prevent unauthorized copying. This matters for commercial buildings and offices where access needs to be managed, especially when an employee leaves, a key is unaccounted for, or you need stronger protection for sensitive areas.
Can you duplicate Medeco high-security keys?
Yes, we provide options for Medeco and other high-security products when the request meets authorization requirements. Bring your key and any key control details you have, and we will confirm what is needed to proceed.
Why can’t I copy a high-security key at a kiosk or self-service machine?
A kiosk is typically for basic key blanks and does not support many restricted or high-security keyways. High-security keys may require authorization, specialized equipment, and proper blanks, so a kiosk is not a reliable option for these key types.
What do I need to bring to request high-security key duplication?
Bring the key you want to duplicate and any documentation tied to your system, such as an authorization card or account information if your system uses it. If you are unsure what applies, share the details and we will explain the requirements before making new keys.
Should we rekey or replace locks if a key is missing?
If a restricted key is missing, duplication alone may not solve the security risk. In some cases, the best option is to rekey the cylinders or upgrade the system to restore control. We can review your goals and provide practical options to keep access secure.
Do you offer high-security key duplication for residential and commercial properties?
Yes. We support residential and commercial customers who want stronger key control, better security, and peace of mind. High-security solutions can be ideal for homes, offices, and buildings where access must be managed carefully.
How much does high-security key duplication cost?
Cost depends on the key type, the system, and whether authorization is required. Once we identify the key and confirm requirements, we provide clear pricing and options so you can decide what fits your needs.
